The Langney Primary Academy History curriculum links to the school’s overarching vision for each of its subjects by ensuring:

INNOVATION IN HISTORY

Bringing learning to life and taking risks using our local area and the rich history opportunities it offers is at the forefront of excellent History teaching.  Children are naturally curious and are keen to discover and learn new things.  Arranging visitors and using specialists will foster and encourage real life learning experiences which will satisfy their curiosity and create a love of history and become lifelong historians.  At Langney, the children are exposed to a wide variety of historians which hook and engage them to learn more about their lives and impact on history today. 

BEING A CENTRE OF  EXCELLENCE IN HISTORY

Based on the National Curriculum Programme of Study, history lessons are taught discretely.  In order to help children make connections in learning, relevant links are made to other subjects in our curriculum such as Art, English and R.E. via  overarching termly themes (e.g. Rotten Romans).


The school provides a high quality history education where pupils gain knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider word. Within each key stage’s programme of study, the History curriculum has been designed to be taught in a coherent, chronological order from the earliest times to the present day.  Learning has been designed to include three strands across all key stages;  Chronological Understanding, Knowledge and Understanding of Key Individuals / Events and Historical Enquiry Skills.
The school utilises the passion and expertise of a current and long standing teaching assistant, to bring that same passion and expertise to many whole-school learning and events.  

The children are given hands-on educational  experiences through meaningful visits, trips and workshops.  The school  uses the wider community, local historians and experts, to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and allow pupils to reach their full potential in History.  Children enjoy and want to achieve.

Here at Langney we foster and encourage children who have a deeper passion and unique talent for the love of History. We have designed a bespoke Swale Scholars Programme for these exceeding children, where they are able to visit Historical sites and put their knowledge to use.

History is taught through a variety of different contexts, allowing the children to use their enquiry skills and promote a love of learning by engaging and creating exciting opportunities to enthuse the pupils and bringing learning to life. With an emphasis on developing enquiry skills, research, empathy and factual knowledge and understanding - a creative approach is taken by teachers and good links with other curriculum areas and core texts. The fact that lessons allow children to make their own decisions and take risks fosters a sense of excitement throughout the process.

History will help children understand about our world and the rich history of our locality  and  will require them to develop empathy for and curiosity about where we came from. We intend that the teaching of History will raise aspirations, broaden horizons and help the pupils to want to research and find things out, developing their knowledge of the world we live in and therefore, creating knowledgeable historians. By broadening these horizons and building these life skills such as empathy, we aim to teach our children to respect and appreciate our world, including our local area and its rich, important history.


As part of the school’s Careers and Aspirations Programme, children are introduced to diverse careers in history such as the media, government, heritage organisations, conservation, teaching, archives, museums and galleries, the police and law.

HEALTH & WELLBEING IN HISTORY

 

Here at Langney, Health and Well Being is extremely important and is embedded into the teaching of History. The curriculum and wider learning promotes moral, cultural, spiritual and physical development of pupils and also encourages the children to take risks.   History resonates with the school’s ‘Keep Learning’ and ‘Take Notice’ ways to well-being and self-awareness.
